Standard or calendar periods?
Standard periods follow the tax year and are the default in most software. Calendar periods end on the last day of a month, which suits you if your accounts run from 1 April. You must choose calendar periods in your software before your first update, and you can't switch during the year. For 2026/27, check with your software how transactions dated 1 to 5 April are handled.
What if I'm late?
There are no penalty points for late quarterly updates in 2026/27. From April 2027, each late update earns a point and four points bring a £200 penalty. Late tax returns and payments are penalised as usual.
